The Climate Governance Commission and the Club of Rome have proposed the establishment of a Global Alliance on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency. The Alliance would help to develop and implement policies to move from linear, waste-based economies to circular economies. By moving from linear to circular production models the pressure on natural systems would lessen considerably, and have dramatic effects on the fight against climate change. The International Resource Panel estimates that the extraction and processing of materials, fuels and food make up more than half of global carbon emissions and account for 90 percent of the loss of biodiversity. Huge gains are to be made, economically, socially and environmentally, by moving from linear to circular material flows and by keeping products and materials in use as long as possible.
