The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (Fossil Fuel NPT) is a campaign to phase out the extraction/production of coal, oil and gas through a global agreement (treaty).
Despite the Paris Agreement setting a crucial global climate target, many governments – including self-proclaimed climate leaders – have continued to approve new licenses for coal, oil and gas extraction and production, even though burning the world’s current fossil fuel reserves would result in seven times more emissions than what is compatible with keeping warming below 1.5ºC.
The agreement would also ensure a fair energy transition to a fossil fuel free economy. This includes job transition for workers in the industry and assistance to developing countries to protect economies and support sustainable development. The campaign compliments, supports and helps facilitate related campaigns and strategies such as divestment, debt relief and fossil fuel bans, as well as the work being advanced by the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance and the Powering Past Coal Alliance.
The Fossil Fuel NPT is supported by the European Parliament, World Health Organization, 95 cities and subnational governments, 2234 non-governmental organizations and over 600,000 individuals including over 100 Nobel Laureates.
